THE KING'S SPEECH:

Nominated for 12 Oscars and 14 Baftas.

Budget of $15 million shot in 39 days in 2009 (same year as Bedlam Productions launched- very new)

Distributed by Momentum Pictures (big American company)

Bedlam joined up with See-Saw Films - both are relatively new INDEPENDENT FILM COMPANIES

Finance from UK FILM COUNCIL

Only 2 sets used in the film (Speech room and Logue's dining room) everything else was ON LOCATION - not CGI- what does this shoiw about budget? Huge contrast to Alice in Wonderland where most of the sets were CGI.

Blow-up people used to fill stadium- more effective than CGI, not having to pay for lots of actors to sit in stadium. Low budget.

Stewart from Production team said main issue was 'No money and lots of sets'

ALICE IN WONDERLAND:

Many famous names: TIM BURTON, Johnny Depp, Stephen Fry, Helena Bonham Carter - Soundtrack by Avril Lavigne.

Won 2 Oscars

The only sets that were not digitally created were the room Alice falls in after falling down the rabbit hole and the Queen's Dungeons. Lots of CGI.

9th highest grossing film of all time as of October 2011!

Grossed 1.02 BILLION

Production budget $200,000,000

Took more than £10 million in its first three days of release.

Wanted to release 3 months after cinema release (prevent piracy within waiting period between DVD release) - cinemas thretened to boycott showing the film if Disney followed through.

DISNEY:

Founded in 1923 - (been running for 88 years)

Over 158 different feature films

Disney nominated for more than 200 Oscars - Just over 50 Wins (put in perspective with the number of films they've made?, is this many?)

HORIZONTAL MARKETING: Has own Radio Station, Theme Parks, Shops, Cruise, Clothing Line, Toys, Video Games, TV Channel and Record Label. Movies made into stage shows e.g. Lion King. Re-releases of old classics? (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King re-released in 3D in 2011) What does this show? Quality IS better than quantity?

Target Audience- Children. Constantly refreshed, need entertainment- lots of demand for films.

Phone APPS- e.g. The Muppets 'TAPTAP'

VIRAL MARKETING - with ONLINE PRESENCE, social networking sites. Facebook groups 'loyal followers of Red/White Queen' alerts audience of upcoming films/sequels. Spoilers, fan-made trailers etc.

Larger budget. Alice in Wonderland- $200, 000, 000

King’s speech advertised differently, posters, newspapers etc. As according to target audience.
‘we needed to partner up with someone with experience in international sales.’ - Simon Egan. This was See-Saw Films.
'The Weinsteins had a release strategy, because we can’t compete with the likes of Transformers with their huge budget. They decided that the film would be ‘discovered’; whereas some blockbusters would be released on about 3,500 screens in the US, ‘The KS’ was released on two. So what you have is word-of-mouth, so the audience feel they are discovering something for the first time'
King’s Speech- filled stadium with dummies (cheaper than hiring hundreds of actors and using expensive editing techniques/CGI)
